For the community neurologist, patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) present significant clinical challenges because these disease states are difficult to diagnose, especially in the early stages, due to highly variable onset. Also, MS and PD are difficult to treat due to highly variable progression. Despite these clinical challenges, it is critical that healthcare providers optimize treatment early to improve quality of life and decrease future disability in patients.

Upon the conclusion of Evolution of Parkinson Disease and Treatments, the participant should be better able to:

  • EXPLAIN the process of neurodegeneration in PD.
  • DESCRIBE why neuroprotection is important in reducing the biochemical insults responsible for cellular damage in PD.
  • CONTRAST disease progression from suboptimal treatment of PD by identifying patients in need of early treatment.
  • IDENTIFY appropriate clinical use of current and future therapies in patients with early, moderate, and advanced PD.

Upon the conclusion of Lessons We’ve Learned from Clinical Trials in MS, the participant should be able to:

  • REVIEW the outcomes of the clinical trials validating the use of disease modifying drugs (DMDs) for clinically isolated syndrome.
  • EXPLAIN why initiating treatment early on in the course of the disease may decrease disability progression and increase neuroprotection.
  • DESCRIBE how current treatments can be utilized to optimize patient care and decrease disease progression.
  • DIFFERENTIATE between the efficacy of novel immunotherapies at reducing disability and relapse rate to currently available DMDs.
